How to measure
Every piece is cut to you, so a few careful numbers go a long way.
Start with these seven, then follow the guide for your outfit.
Neck
Around the base of your neck, where a round collar would sit. Keep one finger under the tape.
Back
Across your back, from the edge of one shoulder to the other, over the top of the shoulder bones.
Bust
Around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back and under your arms.
Waist
Around your natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button.
Hips
Around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, with your feet together.
Height
Standing straight against a wall, without shoes, from the top of your head to the floor.
Dress length
From the top of your shoulder, beside the neck, down to where you want the hem, in the shoes you plan to wear.
Every measurement, explained
Before you start
- Use a soft tape measure. A string and a ruler work too.
- Wear the underwear you will wear with the piece, or thin, close-fitting clothes.
- Stand straight and relaxed, with your feet together and your arms at your sides. Breathe normally and do not hold your tummy in.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight. You should be able to slide one finger underneath it.
- Keep the tape level all the way round, and check it in a mirror.
- Ask a friend to help if you can, especially for back, lengths and sleeves.
- Measure twice. If the numbers differ, send the larger one.
Body
- Bust
- Around the fullest part of your bust, with the tape level across your back.
- Underbust
- Around your ribcage, directly under your bust, where a bra band sits.
- Waist
- Around the narrowest part of your torso. Bend to one side: the crease that forms is your natural waist.
- Hips
- Around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, usually 7 to 9 inches below your waist.
- Neck
- Around the base of your neck, where a round collar would sit.
- Back
- Across your back, from the edge of one shoulder bone to the other.
Tops and sleeves
- Shoulder to bust
- From the top of your shoulder, beside the neck, straight down to the fullest point of your bust.
- Bust span
- Straight across from one bust point to the other.
- Shoulder to waist
- From the top of your shoulder, beside the neck, over the bust and down to your natural waist.
- Round arm
- Around the fullest part of your upper arm, with your arm relaxed.
- Sleeve length
- From the edge of your shoulder, down the outside of your slightly bent arm, to where you want the sleeve to end: short, elbow, three-quarter or wrist.
- Wrist
- Around your wrist bone, for fitted cuffs.
Lengths for tops, dresses and skirts
- Top length
- From the top of your shoulder, beside the neck, down to where you want the top or blouse to end.
- Dress length
- From the top of your shoulder, beside the neck, down to where you want the hem. Wear the shoes you plan to wear.
- Skirt length
- From your natural waist down to where you want the hem: knee, midi or floor. Wear the shoes you plan to wear.
- Height
- Standing straight against a wall, without shoes. It helps us balance proportions and lengths.
Trousers and jumpsuits
- Trouser length
- Down the outside of your leg, from your natural waist to where you want the hem, usually the ankle bone. Wear the shoes you plan to wear.
- Inside leg
- Also called the inseam. From the crotch, where your legs meet at the top, straight down the inside of your leg to the ankle bone.
- Crotch depth
- Also called the rise. Sit up straight on a flat, firm chair and measure down the side of your body, from your natural waist to the chair seat. This sets how high or low the trousers sit.
- Full crotch
- From your natural waist at the front, down between your legs and up to your natural waist at the back. Keep the tape close to the body but not tight. This stops trousers pulling or sagging at the seat.
- Thigh
- Around the fullest part of your upper thigh, just below the crotch.
- Knee
- Around your knee, with the leg straight.
- Calf
- Around the fullest part of your lower leg.
- Ankle
- Around your ankle, or the width you want at the hem for a slimmer or wider leg.
For a jumpsuit, also send your shoulder to waist measurement so the body sits correctly.
What to send for each outfit
- Dress
- Bust, waist, hips, back, shoulder to waist and dress length. Add sleeve length and round arm if it has sleeves.
- Top or blouse
- Bust, underbust, waist, back, top length, and sleeve length and round arm if it has sleeves.
- Skirt
- Waist, hips and skirt length.
- Trousers
- Waist, hips, trouser length, inside leg, crotch depth, full crotch, thigh, knee, calf and ankle.
- Jumpsuit
- Everything for a top and for trousers, plus shoulder to waist. Full crotch matters most here, so the body is not too short.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring over thick clothing or a padded bra you will not wear with the piece.
- Pulling the tape tight or holding your breath.
- Letting the tape slip down at the back.
- Measuring lengths without the shoes you plan to wear.
- Mixing inches and centimetres. Choose one and use it for every number.
Unsure about any measurement? Leave it blank and we will guide you through it on WhatsApp or a virtual fitting.
Size reference
Every piece is made to your own measurements. Use this chart only as a starting point if you usually shop by size. All measurements are in inches. Back is measured across your back, from the edge of one shoulder to the other.

Can I choose any colour?

How do I care for Àdìrẹ?
Hand wash in cold water, on its own, with a mild soap. Do not wring. Dry inside out in the shade, and iron on the reverse while slightly damp. Hand-dyed cloth can release a little colour in the first washes, which is normal.
Spot clean Aṣọ-òkè trims gently and keep them away from bleach.
